No eggs, dairy, or anything of the flesh. Plant based. Vegan. All words that seem to scare people and are the butt of the thanksgiving jokes. You know your plate is full of veggies, bread, and sweet potatoes if you're vegan around holiday time. You don't get many options.

*cue trumpets playing a heavenly melody*

Bomb af! Inobe Nicole. Not only has a dope ass sense of style, but she also cooks .. amazing vegan dishes! Once Inobe showed me a couple simple vegan recipes, I was sold. (I went vegan for 2 months but then I had a cheese crumble. My new lifestyle disappeared.) I just needed to rethink traditional dishes that normally held meat as the star. My favorite that I can't STOP making?! The tacos! Made with walnut pieces and cashew halves, cumin, salt (to taste), and olive oil. Topped with red onions, tomatoes, avacado, and cilantro wrapped in a lettuce leaf. Everyone I've made this dish for, fell in love! It's a raw dish (no heat necessary) and only requires a food processor. Perfect! Takes 5 minutes to make.

Be sure to pop over to her website for fashion inspiration and her raw vegan taco recipe!

Personal Project: Black Girl Beautiful ATLANTA 2017 by NikkRich

There is something about rich royal colors like blue and deep purple .. oh, and orange, golden yellow, and ... really all the colors in the spectrum compliment brown skin perfectly! If you didn't get a chance to attend black girl beautiful, hopefully you learned your lesson and won't miss it again. (Just kidding!) What's special about BGB 2017 is, I attended in 2016 and became apart of it in 2017!

Win!

BGB and I teamed up with sculptur, Kristie Mays, and created a series of portraits featuring her handmade wire crowns. Which are amazing af! Let me tell you. I shot portraits of the attendees wearing the crows so they could briefly become apart of the project. Seeing themselves as royalty!

This new body of work is an extension of my personal work. Yup, that project that I mentioned seemed to load in the background, brought about a new way to show my work! The project I pushed myself to do when sometimes I really wanted to give up. The project I sometimes wished I never created because some Saturday's (I shot the portraits almost every Saturday) I just wanted to relax in bed. The project I stuck with until I felt it was time to move onto something new. The project that created a new venture for me. I constantly try to talk myself out of doing things I signed myself up to do and i'm trying to rewire myself out of thinking that way. This is gratifying in more than one way! Something I purely made out of the need to create turned into something bigger. I learned it was bigger than me when a young girl came up to me and said I was her favorite photographer and she's been following my work for a year. Mind boggling to think someone you've never met is able to see your work through a small device such as a phone, then to meet them in person. Crazy how big the small world of the internet is.

Being able to speak to these women and share stories along side my sister (who played a BIG role in my upbringing) created a new perspective. I literally saw younger me in every single young girl that came to get a portrait. BGB was beautiful to say the least and I hope to be able to experience that again one day on a larger scale.

Be sure to see more of the portraits similar to the ones above at wearemonarch

Soft.Beautiful. Melanin. by NikkRich

You can't deny the beauty of melanin.

I started this project like I do all my portrait projects, with black women in mind. I began shooting black women my Sophomore year of college. Little did I know I started working on something that would clearly be my lifes work. A body of work that will always be loading, playing in the background of every thought and concept. With each new chapter in my life, the project just takes on a new face.  Stylistically they don't look the same, but they have the same underlying intention. Uplift, beauty, care, and love.

Creative Collaboration - AVA: Part Deux - ✌🏾 by NikkRich

AVA came to LA!

When ever we get together, we always create!

She came out to LA for a couple days and like always, we shot on a whim.

( Minimal planning seems to be working out for me lately. )

We met up in Hollywood and caught up while independent designer, Alex helped Ava with the styling. Everywhere in Los Angeles is perfect for a photo shoot so naturally, I shot in an apartment complex. What I enjoy most about apartments here, is it seems they all seem to have a hint of lingering nostalgia.

All in all, it was a good time as always but now i'm screaming AVA COME BACK !

Visit her website for music updates and dope ass visuals!

Creative Collaboration: Ava by NikkRich

When I first met Ava we instantly vibed. It wasn't hard, she has an open soul. Approached with high energy and easy conversation it felt like we knew each other from way back. I first saw her perform at pure lounge on U street. The air of the lounge vibrated with energy from all the emerging artists waiting to share the words that best expressed them as beings.

She had a song with another artist but was able to share her spoken word from her EP called vandalized. We both share the passion to be the best at what we do, as women, and as black women. It's no question, the music business is dominated by men, and women are just sex symbols, but AVA does not let that domination kill her approach and way of performance. At 5'0 and small frame, she goes in like a beast. She's unapologetically herself. Artists like that inspire me to do this #creativecollaboration project. Never have I experienced energy like hers.

Vandalized.
